A crew of thieves who stole California Lottery Scratchers from 7-Eleven stores were arrested after being caught in the act by detectives, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said April 16.
The crew, three adults and one juvenile, stole $250,000 worth of scratchers during a two-month string of 44 strong-arm robberies, officials said in a press release. They also collected $90,000 from the scratchers.
The crew was busted during an investigation by retail-theft detectives, who officials said witnessed the crew jump the counter of a 7-Eleven and steal over $3,000 worth of scratchers. All of those stolen scratchers were recovered, officials said.
The adults, whose identities weren’t revealed, were booked at the Century Regional Detention Facility on robbery charges and arraigned April 15 on $100,000 bail at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center in Los Angeles.
The juvenile was taken to the Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall on robbery charges. He will next be transported to the Compton Courthouse Probation Department with a court date still pending, according to the press release.
The recently formed Organized Retail Theft Taskforce includes multiple Southern California law enforcement agencies including several city police departments in Los Angeles County.
