A Los Angeles man was arrested following a break-in at Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass’s residence early in the morning on April 21.
Los Angeles police said a burglar smashed a window at about 6:40 a.m. to enter the Getty House, the official mayor’s residence located in Windsor Square, which is five miles west of the Los Angeles City Hall.
“The Los Angeles Police Department responded and took a suspect into custody without incident,” the LAPD posted on X Sunday.
No one was hurt and nothing was stolen during the burglary, according to police.
Ephraim Matthew Hunter, 29, remained in jail Monday and was charged with felony burglary in connection to the break-in. He was awaiting a court date and held on $100,000 bail Monday, according to county inmate records.
Mr. Hunter has previously served seven years in prison after violently beating a man in Massachusetts during a drug deal in 2015, according to court records and news reports of a man with the same name and birthdate.
Mr. Hunter was reportedly arrested in Dedham, Massachusetts, in connection to the beating of a customer during sale of illegal drug Molly, a psychoactive substance also called ecstasy, court records show.
Los Angeles police have released few details about the continuing investigation into Sunday’s burglary and have not yet identified a motive.
The suspect made it to the second floor of the home, causing the mayor to hide in a panic room-style safe area, law enforcement sources told the Los Angeles Times.
Los Angeles Deputy Mayor of Communications Zach Seidl said the mayor was thankful for the law enforcement’s response.
“Mayor Bass and her family were not injured and are safe,” Mr. Seidl said in a statement. “The mayor is grateful for LAPD for responding and arresting the suspect.”
