Two California cities—San Francisco and San Diego—are among the top 10 most expensive places to park, according to a study published last month by FINN, a car subscription service based in Germany.
“With the high cost of living, the cost of rent, housing, groceries, and healthcare are often compared from city to city, with a notable variance in costs,” the company said in a statement. “There is, however, another regular cost to consider for drivers, and that is parking.”
New York City came in first for having the most expensive parking, with the lowest monthly cost starting at nearly $444. San Francisco came in second place at $300.
Seattle had the third-highest cost of parking, starting at $250 a month, according to FINN. San Diego ranked sixth, with the lowest parking starting at $200.
To create the ratings, FINN selected the most populated cities in the United States and then identified the lowest price of monthly parking for each city. It also used “excellent” rated car parks with more than 50 customer reviews and gave each city a score out of 10.
Riverside, about 60 miles east of Los Angeles, was the fourth-cheapest place to park, tying with Nashville, Tennessee; Houston, Texas; and St. Louis, Missouri, FINN reported. The monthly cost for parking in all four cities was about $50.
The top three cheapest cities were Tulsa, Oklahoma ($21.70); Dallas, Texas ($40); and Memphis, Tennessee ($40).
San Diego came out as the worst city, overall, in the United States for parking, according to the study. The cheapest monthly cost of parking in the coastal city was $200, and the city lacked amenities in parking lots including electric vehicle charging and wheelchair accessibility, FINN said.
Long Beach, California, was the second-worst place to park. The monthly cost there was only $95 a month, but the parking also lacked amenities and there were no “excellent-rated” parking lots, according to the study.
The cities with the most electric vehicle charging parking lots were Chicago, with seven; Washington and Baltimore, each with three; and Seattle, Columbus, Ohio, and Miami, each with one.
