Two men attacked a pair of police officers serving as bodyguards for San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie on Thursday as the mayor and his team were visiting the city’s Tenderloin neighborhood, according to officials. Mayor Lurie was unharmed.
“I saw two individuals in the middle of a street. … I was worried about them and I was worried about [the] safety of pedestrians and cars coming,” Mayor Lurie told reporters on Friday. “We asked them to get up and then the incident began. ... I’m just really happy the members of my detail are okay.”
Two videos showing separate angles of part of the altercation were posted and shared online. They appear to show one of the officers shoving one of the men before they both grapple and the man takes the officer to the ground. Mayor Lurie can be seen in the background exiting the frame before the other officer comes in to help pin the man down.
The San Francisco Police Department said in a statement that officers responded to the scene after receiving a request for backup for officers that were in a physical altercation with two unidentified men. The officers had non-life-threatening injuries and were treated by paramedics at the scene.
The Epoch Times reached out to the San Francisco Police Department for comment but did not receive a response by publication time.
“The San Francisco Police Officers Association is relieved to hear that Mayor Daniel Lurie was not injured in the violent incident that occurred Thursday evening in the Tenderloin,” Louis Wong, president of the Association, said of the incident. “We are grateful that the officers assigned to the mayor’s security detail acted swiftly and courageously to protect him in a dangerous and unpredictable situation.”
The two men were arrested on suspicion of assaulting a peace officer with a deadly weapon, resisting a peace officer, and possession of drug paraphernalia, among other charges.

“[San Francisco] residents deserve a leader that cares about what’s happening on our streets but I will, of course, talk with our SFPD leadership and the chief on this matter,” Lurie said.
According to Civic Hub data, the Tenderloin neighborhood, which spans 31 city blocks, had more than 8,500 crime incidents reported by the San Francisco Police Department last year, including more than 800 assaults.
