The Los Angeles Police Department alerted the Wilshire community about burglars using Wi-Fi jammers to enter homes.
Residents in the Wilshire neighborhood, located in central Los Angeles, have been victims of various burglaries involving three or four suspects using Wi-Fi jammers to enter homes, the LAPD announced in an alert March 4.
The devices are used to block Wi-Fi connections and disable some devices, such as a home security system and surveillance cameras, according to police.
Suspects are known to enter through second-story balconies and seek high-end jewelry, purses, U.S. currency, and other valuables, the LAPD reported.
“They tend to ransack and target primary bedrooms,” the department said. “On many occasions, these suspects will have a getaway vehicle and driver to act as a look out.”
The LAPD is asking the public for help in deterring the burglaries by padlocking electrical circuit boxes and adding cameras and lighting around homes.
Police also suggested the public not tell rideshare drivers about vacation plans, and not to post their plans on social media, in addition to taking other steps for protection.
