Christmas time is a magical time of year. It can also be stressful, pressure-filled, and hectic if we don’t manage our time well and take care of our minds, bodies, and spirits.

Honing our habits can go a long way toward relieving stress, staying on top of life’s demands, and even ensuring that we don’t miss the joy of this special time. Here are 10 simple habits that, if performed each day, are sure to bring more peace and joy throughout your holiday season.

Awaken on Time

Regulating your sleep schedule is a simple way to reduce your body’s stress, strengthen your immune system, clear your thinking, and balance your energy throughout the day. Define a wake-up time for every day, set your alarm (ideally across the room and out of reach), and get up at the same time each day.

To motivate yourself out of bed, develop the practice of doing something enjoyable each morning that you can look forward to. Simple activities like sipping coffee, reading, going for a walk, or sitting outside first thing can be enough to entice you to follow through each day.

Water Before Coffee

We often wake up dehydrated. Drinking water first thing in the morning starts each day on the right foot. With many benefits even beyond rehydrating, such as boosting metabolism, improving digestion, and enhancing alertness, drinking water is a simple way to begin the day well.

Avoid Your Devices

There’s an extra temptation this time of year to constantly shop online, in addition to the countless other ways our phones and digital devices beckon to us day and night. The benefits of curbing your use of these devices can be profound.

Set a window of time each day—between say noon and 5 p.m. or 3 p.m. and 8 p.m.—that you allow yourself to access your digital devices. Outside of that window, keep them put away in a designated spot. Dedicating your morning time to analog-only activities allows you to focus, be present, and not give away your energy to external influences. Winding down free of devices helps improve the quality of your sleep.

If your work requires you to be at your computer most of the time, at least allow those windows to be free of social media. Define what works for you and stick to the rule you set for yourself.

Make a List and Check It Daily

Put pen to paper and jot down all of the details, big and small, that you need and want to keep track of this holiday season. Each day, return to your list, add to it, edit it, check it off, and allow it to direct your actions and stay on top of things.

On this list, define the ultimate outcome you hope to achieve with your holiday efforts. Why are you doing this in the first place? Is this the best way to go about achieving this goal? Is it the simplest way? Is there a more fun way to get this stuff done? A few minutes of contemplation on bigger picture questions like that can lead you to more enjoyment overall.

Keep the habit of referring to this list daily so that you stay on track.

Move Your Body

When you add countless holiday tasks to an already jam-packed life, habits such as exercise can easily get pushed aside. When life gets more demanding, that’s precisely when an exercise benefit can reap the most benefits.

Commit to moving your body each and every day.

Take a Break

It can be easy to feel like you’ve got way more to do than you have time to get done. At least once per day, step off the hamster wheel and give yourself a break. Breathe. Rest. Just pause and unwind. Even 15 minutes can go a long way.

Go Outside

The weather can vary widely this time of year, but don’t let that stop you from getting fresh air each and every day. Even if it’s raining, snowing, blustery, or unseasonably hot—dress appropriately and get out there to experience what nature has to offer each day. Sunshine, fresh air, and taking in the beauty of the natural world are more valuable than many of us give them credit for.

Have Fun

If you’re the main magic maker in your family, you can get so bogged down making magic that you forget to partake in it. Each day, make a point of doing something lighthearted and fun, whether it’s a walk in the twilight after dinner, a spontaneous snowball fight, or a cozy movie with cocoa and blankets.

Connect With the Spirit of the Season

This is a time of year to strengthen your faith, pray, study, and deepen your understanding and connection with God. Whatever that process or practice looks like for you, take a little time each day to engage your spirit. Schedule this appointment with yourself each day, and let the light of the holidays inspire you.

Go to Bed on Time

Coming full circle, ensure a successful tomorrow by affording yourself ample sleep each night. Set a nightly bedtime and stick to it. You might even set an alarm to remind yourself when it’s time to start winding down.

When you take good care of yourself, you have more to give to those around you. Here’s to the merriest season yet!
