A 16-year-old boy suspected of the gang-related fatal shooting of a 38-year-old man in Anaheim was taken into custody, police announced May 28.

Officers responded to reports of shots fired on the 900 block of South Anaheim Boulevard, near Vermont Avenue and Walnut Grove Park, around 7 p.m. Friday and found Jesse Barragan of Anaheim with a gunshot wound and unresponsive in a liquor store parking lot, according to Anaheim Police Department Sgt. Jon McClintock.

Barragan was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Homicide and gang investigators worked over the Memorial Day weekend to identify the boy responsible for the shooting.

No additional identifying information was provided because of the suspect’s age.

The suspect was arrested in Garden Grove on Sunday without incident and booked at the Orange County Juvenile Hall on suspicion of murder.

“Detectives believe the shooting was gang-related and are not disclosing any additional details at this time because the investigation is ongoing,” McClintock said in a statement.

Anyone with information on the shooting was urged to call the Anaheim police at 714-321-3669. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 855-TIP-OCCS.
