Many services in the United States are closed on May 25 for Memorial Day, the nation’s annual federal holiday dedicated to honoring and mourning service members who died while serving the country.
The holiday is observed in part by the National Moment of Remembrance, which encourages all Americans to pause at 3 p.m. for a moment of silence.
U.S. embassies around the world will fly flags at half-staff in observance of Memorial Day, and President Donald Trump is expected to take part in a wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery.
The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) said on its website that all post offices will close for Memorial Day and that regular mail delivery and retail services will resume on Tuesday.
“Customers are reminded that when Post Offices are closed, they can still access many postal products and services through usps.com and self-service kiosks available in select lobbies nationwide,” USPS stated.
Most FedEx services will be closed on May 25, with only FedEx Custom Critical delivery available, while FedEx Office locations will operate under modified hours, according to its 2026 holiday schedule.
UPS services will not be available on Memorial Day, with only UPS Express Critical delivery remaining open for urgent shipments, according to its 2026 holiday schedule.
Nonessential government offices, city halls, courthouses, libraries, and public schools will be closed for the national holiday.
Police and fire departments, emergency responders, and other public safety services remain available during the holiday.
The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will suspend trading in observance of Memorial Day. The U.S. bond market also closed early at 2 p.m. on May 22 and will remain closed during the holiday, according to the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.

Some businesses remain open on Memorial Day, though they may operate on reduced hours, and schedules may vary by location.
Costco warehouses will close Monday for the holiday, according to its website. Sam’s Club warehouses will open on Memorial Day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. for Plus members and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. for Club members.

Grocery stores such as Aldi, Kroger, Stop & Shop, Trader Joe’s, and Whole Foods Market will remain open during the holiday. Major retailers such as Walmart, Target, Kohl’s, IKEA, and Home Depot are also open on Memorial Day, though store hours may vary by location.
Pharmacies such as CVS, Rite Aid, and Walgreens will remain open, though some stores may operate on limited hours depending on their locations.
Fast-food chains and restaurants are typically open during the holiday, including McDonald’s, Burger King, Chipotle, Dunkin’, Subway, Chick-fil-A, and Taco Bell, though operating hours may differ by location.
