A handwritten manuscript made between July 5 and July 10,  1776, the earliest report of American independence to reach Britain, is displayed with an accompanying letter (L), during an exhibition preview at the National Maritime Museum in London on April 20, 2026. The manuscript, sent by Vice Admiral Molyneux Shuldham to John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, will go on display to the public on June 15 during a free temporary exhibition marking 250 years of American Independence. In his letter, Shuldham, who was stationed in North America at the time, transcribed a Dunlap Broadside printing of the Declaration of Independence, produced on July 4, 1776, and sent it to the Earl of Sandwich. According to the museum, it is possible “this transcription was the very first text of the Declaration to reach British shores.” (Leon Neal/Getty Images)
