ALHAMBRA, Calif.—A man driving an allegedly stolen pickup truck was taken into custody April 2 after being tracked by authorities for more than an hour while he drove a circuitous route on city streets, and at one point on a sidewalk.
According to the Lakewood Sheriff’s Station, the chase began around 11:30 a.m. near Myrtle Avenue and 70th Street in Paramount following reports of a stolen 2004 Ford pickup.
A chase ensued, during which police occasionally pulled back all units due to the suspect’s erratic driving, eventually leading into Alhambra, where he drove seemingly in circles on local streets. He repeatedly drove through the parking lot of a gas station on the corner of Garfield Avenue and Alhambra Road.
During one trip through the station, the suspect stopped to pick up a white bag that was on the corner, then ran back to the truck and drove off again.
The suspect sporadically drove on the wrong side of local streets, over curbs and at one point along a stretch of sidewalk, even though there were no police cruisers closely following him at the time.
Around 12:45 p.m., he stopped the truck in the middle of the street near Garfield Avenue and McLean Street and tried to flee on foot. After scaling over a small neighborhood wall, he was spotted in the clutches of another man, who sat him down on a chair in a grassy area. A woman was also seen hugging the man.
According to a report from the scene, the woman may have been the suspect’s girlfriend, and the man who grabbed the suspect may have been her father.
Police quickly descended on the scene and took the man into custody. His name was not immediately released.
No injuries were reported.
