San Diego County couple Michelle and Kenneth Mack are facing multiple charges for allegedly masterminding organized retail crime scheme that netted $8 million in beauty products across California.

The couple was arrested at their home Dec. 6. and have since pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy, grand theft, and receipt of stolen property, according to NBC7 News.

State law enforcement officials claim the Macks paid more than seven people to steal cosmetics from Ulta Beauty and Sephora stores in 21 counties and then sold the items on her Amazon storefront.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta called the scheme “audacious.”

“Organized retail crime has significant financial and safety implications for businesses, retailers, and consumers,” Mr. Bonta said in a press release Feb. 16. “Today, we are addressing an audacious instance of organized retail theft and making it clear that such criminal activity will not be accepted in California.”

The thefts in California allegedly occurred in Alameda, Placer, Kern, Contra Costa, Orange, Los Angeles, Santa Clara, San Diego, Sacramento, San Mateo, Solano, Riverside, San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Napa, Marin, Tulare, San Bernardino, Sonoma, Ventura, and Yolo counties.

The investigation into the alleged theft involved officers and others from the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Ulta’s Los Prevention Organized Retail Crime team, and Sephora representatives.

The criminal complaint, filed Feb. 16, alleges Michelle Mack sold the stolen goods on her Amazon storefront for a fraction of the retail price, and recruited young women to enter makeup stores to steal the items for her inventory. The suspects allegedly responsible for the thefts were caught on surveillance video.

The Attorney General’s Office has charged seven other defendants—Alina Franco, Pricilla Sophia Ramos, Kimora Lee Gooding, Reina Marie Munoz, Asia Mei Drake, Serena Marie Reyes, and Alexandra Averhart --who allegedly were involved in the theft ring.

Law enforcement searched the Macks’ San Diego County mansion and found large amounts of makeup products stored, organized, and prepped for shipping, according to Mr. Bonta’s office.

Retailers from Ulta and Sephora helped investigators by conducting an inventory of the estimated $400,000 in recovered products during searches of residences, the attorney general said.

The theft is estimated to be just over $7.8 million nationwide, according to Mr. Bonta.

Dan Petrousek, senior vice president of loss prevention at Ulta Beauty, said retail crime affects everyone.

“The rise in organized retail crime affects all retailers, consumers, and communities, and we believe it’s important to take action to deter the criminals perpetuating this problem,” Mr. Petrousek said in the press release.

Two months after they were arrested, the couple listed their four-bedroom Bonsall, California, mansion in San Diego County for $2.75 million. The property has already been discounted by $200,000. The property includes panoramic views, a chapel, and a professionally managed vineyard.

Kenneth Mack answered a call for comment from California Insider Friday but quickly hung up. Attorneys representing the couple were not located.
