Power Restored in Most of San Francisco After Fire in Substation Impacted 130,000 Customers

Power has been restored to a majority of San Francisco after a fire inside a utility substation knocked out service to 130,000 customers on Dec. 20.

Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) first reported the outage Saturday at 4:00 p.m. and was able to restore power to 95,000 customers before midnight.

An additional 15,000 customers had the lights back on around 7:00 a.m.

As of noon PST, on Dec. 21, just over 15,000 customers in high-traffic areas remained without power, according to PG&E’s outage map.

“We apologize for the delay in getting your power back on,” PG&E wrote on its website.

“Unforeseen issues can cause unexpected delays for our crews. We will update you as soon as we know more.”

Power outages remained around the San Francisco Mayor’s office, the Richmond District, and Golden Gate Park as last-minute holiday shoppers flooded the nearby Union Square district, a major shopping and event area.

“Due to an outage, we won’t be able to open for brunch today,” Lokma, a restaurant in the Richmond District, posted on Instagram Sunday morning.

Bazaar Cafe, an area restaurant that features original music, tried to make the best of the outage by offering a limited menu with items that didn’t spoil as a result of the outage.

“Crept out of our (still unpowered) house and walked along eerily dark streets to assess damage at the cafe (which has power!),” the cafe wrote in an Instagram post.

“It’s toss-out time, we’re clearing it all and starting afresh, hoping we can get stock, even if we need to source from other towns.”

San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie said efforts are underway to help impacted communities.

“I have been in touch with community leaders in those neighborhoods and we’re working to bring resources directly to those communities,” Lurie shared in an X post on Sunday.

“We will continue to push PG&E for a firm timeline on full power restoration. We will continue to provide updates later this morning.”

PG&E said it is continuing to work to restore power for everyone, but it won’t be an easy process.

“The damage from the fire in our substation was extensive and the repairs and safe restoration will be complex,” PG&E wrote on X.

“We will continue working until all customers are restored. We encourage customers to be safe.”

The outage even prompted Waymo, the world’s first fully autonomous ride-hailing service, to pause trips.

“We have temporarily suspended our ride-hailing services in the San Francisco Bay Area due to the widespread power outage,” a spokesperson told The Epoch Times in a statement on Dec. 21.

“Our teams are working diligently and in close coordination with city officials, and we are hopeful to bring our services back online soon.”
