LOS ANGELES—Police Thursday were searching for the assailants who unleashed a barrage of gunfire in South Los Angeles, wounding five women and one man who may not have been the intended targets.

The shooting was reported around 3:10 p.m. Wednesday when officers from the Los Angeles Police Department’s 77th Street Community Police Station responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call at the intersection of 74th and Figueroa streets, police said.

When the officers arrived, they found the victims suffering from gunshot wounds, primarily in the lower extremities, police said.

Police said the victims were walking along the street when three suspects drove up to them and opened fire, and then fled the scene a dark-colored sedan. Officers on the scene described the suspects as one female and two males.

“At this early stage of the investigation, detectives do not believe any of the six individuals were the intended targets,” according to an LAPD statement.

LAPD Detective Dean Vinluan said the area “is plagued with gang violence,” but police cautioned in a statement that “ it remains unclear if the incident was gang-related.”

All six victims were taken to hospitals in unknown conditions, but all were considered stable.

Video from the scene showed a dark-colored vehicle parked at the shooting location, with bullet holes visible in the windshield. At least two dozen shell casings were seen on the ground.

The wounded women range in age from 40 to 62 and the injured man is 36, according to the LAPD.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting was asked to call detectives at the 77th Street Community Police Station at 323-786-5420. During non-business hours or on weekends, calls should be made to 1-877-527-3247.Callers who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 or send tips to lacrimestoppers.org.
