A man was shot and critically wounded by police during a barricade incident in Sylmar, Calif., authorities said March 10.

The shooting occurred March 9 at 8:35 p.m. in the 14100 block of Foothill Boulevard, a few hours after police responded to a call about a “violent male with mental illness,” according to police.

When officers arrived, they found the man barricaded in an apartment and armed with a knife.

Once police established a perimeter they called a SWAT team to negotiate.

The man eventually went outside to a courtyard with a large kitchen knife, according to police. Officers then shot him.

The man was taken to a hospital in critical condition, authorities said.

No information was provided about his identity.
