CLAREMONT, Calif.—A 27-year-old felon was being held in lieu of $2 million bail May 18 for allegedly robbing a supermarket in Claremont and hiding the handgun used in the crime under a vehicle at a nearby business.
Three people suffered gunshot wounds during the robbery at Super King Market, 436 Auto Center Drive, and were taken to a hospital in stable condition, according to Lt. Jason Walters of the Claremont Police Department.
Officers and detectives sent to the location at about 5:10 p.m. Friday were able to obtain witness statements and video surveillance of the shooting, which identified the suspect, Mr. Walters said.
“During the search for the suspect, officers located evidence, which included the suspect’s clothing and a handgun, which were believed to be used during the crime,” he said. “These items had been hidden by the suspect under a vehicle at a nearby business.”
Michael Abeyta of Pomona was located with the assistance of a sheriff’s helicopter walking in the 100 block of Meredith Avenue. He was taken into custody without incident and booked on suspicion of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, felon in possession of a firearm, criminal threats, and robbery.
An alleged female accomplice was also identified, Mr. Walters said. Amanda Soto, 37, also of Pomona, who had an active warrant for her arrest, was arrested on suspicion of robbery and was being held at the Claremont Police Department jail in lieu of $125,000 bail.
Police said there were no further outstanding suspects.
