Uber plans to invest up to $1.25 billion in Rivian to help deploy 10,000 autonomous robotaxis, the two companies announced March 19.
An initial $300 million has been committed to the endeavor, with the remaining $950 million of potential investments dependent on “certain autonomous milestones” that weren’t explicitly disclosed.
“[This partnership] will help accelerate our path to level 4 autonomy to create one of the safest and most convenient autonomous platforms in the world,” Rivian founder and CEO RJ Scaringe said. “The scale of Rivian’s growing data flywheel coupled with RAP1, our state of the art in-house inference platform, and our multi-modal perception platform make us incredibly excited for the rapid advancement of Rivian autonomy over the next couple of years.”
The autonomous vehicles are expected to be deployed through the Rivian R2, the Irvine, California-based automaker’s upcoming electric SUV. Consumers will be able to purchase the standard R2, but the fully autonomous version will be available exclusively through Uber’s platform.
The first releases will be in San Francisco and Miami in 2028 and are expected to expand to 25 cities across the United States, Canada, and Europe by 2031.
The companies said they have the option to negotiate up to 40,000 more autonomous Rivian R2 vehicles starting in 2030.
Rivian turned gross profit positive in 2025 with $144 million, but still lost approximately $3.6 billion on the year.
“We’re big believers in Rivian’s approach—designing the vehicle, compute platform, and software stack together, while maintaining end-to-end control of scaled manufacturing and supply in the U.S.,” Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said. “That vertical integration, combined with data from their growing consumer vehicle base and experience managing the complexities of commercial fleets, gives us conviction to set these ambitious but achievable targets.”
Uber has been heavily investing in other businesses and expanding its product offerings recently. On Feb. 23, it announced its plans to acquire parking app SpotHero to bring parking reservations onto the Uber app.
On Feb. 25, Uber and Joby Aviation announced the launch of their electric “air taxi” aircraft, and on Feb. 9, Uber also announced it will acquire Turkey-based Getir’s delivery business to expand its Uber Eats offerings.
The San Francisco-based rideshare company became profitable in 2023 and had over $10 billion in earnings last year.
