The Jewish community is calling for “urgent action” after two more synagogues in the Toronto area were targeted by gunfire overnight.

The Toronto Police said officers are investigating after reports of gunfire in the area of Bathurst Street and Glencairn Avenue in the early hours of March 7, finding bullet holes in the doors of the Shaarei Shomayim synagogue. Authorities said no injuries have been reported.

Earlier, the York Regional Police responded to reports of gunfire at the Beth Avraham Yoseph of Toronto synagogue in the Thornhill neighbourhood. No injuries were reported from this incident as well.

The incidents follow another shooting targeting a synagogue in the Toronto area on March 2.

“Our leaders must be absolutely clear that it is outrageous for Canadian communities to face violence because of events happening abroad. No more ’thoughts and prayers,' we need to see urgent action,” the UJA Federation of Greater Toronto and the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs said in a joint statement on March 7.

“All levels of government must move immediately to address the escalating security demands of communities targeted by this wave of violence.”

Prime Minister Mark Carney said in a statement that these attacks are “an assault on the rights of Jewish Canadians.”

“The federal government will use every tool available to confront antisemitic violence and hatred, and protect places of worship,” he said.

Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre said he is “appalled” by the shootings, adding that Canada’s Jewish community is “under attack.”

“Government’s core responsibility is the safety of its people. It is time to end this violence once and for all,” he said.

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow said the attacks are “disgusting acts of antisemitism,” and that police are dedicating resources to find those responsible.

“Toronto Police are increasing their presence in the area to keep people safe,” she said.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he is “disgusted” by the shootings at the synagogues, and that his government will work with police to ensure the safety of places of worship.

“Antisemitism has no place in Ontario. We will never waver in our support for Canada’s Jewish community,” he said.

The Jewish community in Canada has been the target of several attacks since the Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attack on Israel and the subsequent war in Gaza, with multiple shootings at synagogues and Jewish schools, and other incidents of vandalism and assault targeting the community.

Police in the Toronto area said they have increased their presence to deter criminal activity in the aftermath of the Iran war, which began with U.S. and Israeli strikes on Feb. 28.

One day after the start of the war, the gym of an Iranian Canadian boxer and activist who co-organized the anti-Iranian regime protest attended by 350,000 people in Toronto on Feb. 14 was shot at 17 times.

The York Regional Police said they are investigating the incident.
