A Republican backed by President Donald Trump won a special runoff election in Georgia for former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s seat.

Clay Fuller took a commanding lead over his opponent, Shawn Harris, winning 55.9 percent of the vote and adding to the Republican Party’s narrow lead in the House.

Fuller, who serves as the district attorney for the Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit, will serve out the remainder of Greene’s term. Greene resigned from her post in Congress earlier this year after a public fallout with Trump.

“They couldn’t beat Donald Trump and they never will,” Fuller told supporters in Ringgold, near the border with Tennessee. “And I will be on Capitol Hill as a warrior to have his back each and every day.”

Fuller thanked Trump for his support, saying in a social media post: “The results tonight are clear: Northwest Georgia stands with MAGA and demands a fighter on Capitol Hill defending the America First agenda.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson took to social media to congratulate Fuller, saying he looks forward to working with Fuller “to continue delivering results and saving America.”

Fuller is also a lieutenant colonel and deputy staff judge advocate in the Air National Guard, according to his campaign page. His term will expire in January 2027 and he will have to run in another Republican primary in May to secure a full two-year term, and could face a June 16 party runoff.

Harris, a retired brigadier general and Polk County cattle producer, is already the Democratic nominee for November. He called it a “fair, hard-fought race” and said that his team will start campaigning for the November election right away.

“And tonight, we start campaigning for November, because, guess what, nobody’s running against me in May. Clay is in another fight right now because he’s got six other Republicans that [are] running against him,” he told his supporters.

“And guess what? Just like we ran Clay to the wire tonight with Donald Trump’s endorsement, we’re gonna beat [him] the next time come in November.”

Trump endorsed Fuller in February, saying in a Truth Social post that Fuller has “the wisdom and courage” to take on the role.

The president said that Fuller would “fight tirelessly” in Congress to drive economic growth, cut taxes and regulations, promote U.S. manufacturing, boost American energy dominance, increase border security, and defend the Second Amendment.

Greene announced her resignation from Congress on Nov. 21, 2025, a week after Trump withdrew his support for her. Her resignation took effect on Jan. 5.
