Iowa Republicans have selected former state Rep. Joe Mitchell as their nominee in the race for the state’s 2nd Congressional District.
Mitchell, who was endorsed by President Donald Trump, won the GOP primary on June 2, defeating state Sen. Charlie McClintock. He will now face the winner of the Democratic primary, state Rep. Lindsay James.
James defeated former nonprofit leader Clint Twedt-Ball and Kathy Dolter, a former dean of nursing at an Iowa community college.
The winner of the contest in November will succeed Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-Iowa), who is running for the U.S. Senate. Cook Political Report has shifted the race from “Solid R” to “Likely R.”
The Republican primary highlighted divisions within the party over Trump. Mitchell embraced the president’s agenda throughout the campaign.
“Ultimately, I work for the president,” Mitchell told local ABC affiliate KCRG.
McClintock, meanwhile, argued that Trump could hurt Republicans in the general election by alienating independent and moderate voters.
“I’m a 2016 Trumper,” McClintock said. “The first time I ever caucused was in 2016 and Trump. He was going to go out to D.C. and he was going to change things.”
McClintock said he has become increasingly critical of Trump during the president’s second term.
“I didn’t leave Trump. He left me,” he said.
Mitchell, who became Iowa’s youngest legislator when he was elected to the state House in 2018 at age 20, has also served in federal housing agencies during the Trump administration. He said his current work focuses on reducing regulations to make homeownership more accessible.
“I’m in charge of a lot of different initiatives to roll back rules and regulations from the Biden era to make sure that more people can get mortgages and afford mortgages,” Mitchell told KCRG.
