Pop star Britney Spears has entered a rehab treatment facility after she was arrested last month on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI), her representative said on April 12.

The representative said in a statement provided to multiple news outlets that Spears has voluntarily checked herself into a substance abuse treatment facility.

Spears, 44, was taken into custody on March 4 by California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers who were responding to reports of a speeding vehicle in Ventura County.

She was given sobriety tests and arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, authorities said. The award-winning singer was released the next morning and is scheduled to appear in court on May 4.

Her representative said at the time that the incident was “unfortunate” and was “completely inexcusable,” adding that Spears will take the necessary steps to ensure compliance with the law moving forward.

“Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life,” the representative told The Hollywood Reporter on March 5. “Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time. Her boys are going to be spending time with her. Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well being.”

Spears, known for her hits like “Oops! … I Did It Again!” and “Baby One More Time,” has two sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James, whom she shares with ex-husband Kevin Federline.

She has largely stepped away from her music career, and hasn’t toured for years. Her last album, “Glory,” came out in August 2016, and she released her best-selling memoir, titled “The Woman in Me,” in October 2023, detailing her rise to stardom.

In 2021, a Los Angeles County judge granted approval to end the conservatorship that governed the singer’s medical, financial, and personal decisions for nearly 14 years.

The conservatorship was put in place by her father, Jamie Spears, in 2008 after she suffered a series of mental health crises.

In 2007, she was charged with misdemeanor hit-and-run after allegedly crashing her car into another vehicle in a Los Angeles parking lot before fleeing the scene. The case was later dismissed after she agreed to pay the driver an undisclosed amount in damages. She lost custody of her children later that year.

Over the years, Spears has maintained a social media presence, frequently posting videos of herself dancing alone in her home and speaking out against alleged mistreatment from family members.
