Seven children impacted by the war between Russia and Ukraine have been reunited with their families in Ukraine, U.S. First Lady Melania Trump announced on Dec. 4.
“My dedication to guaranteeing the safe return of children to their families in this region is unwavering,” Melania Trump said in a statement.
“I commend the leadership and persistent diplomacy of Russia and Ukraine in the pursuit of the reunification of children and families,” she said.
“Their bridge-building has created a tangible collaborative environment—an anchor for optimism. This cooperation will continue to drive the process forward through the next phase.”
The first lady went on to say that the United States has provided humanitarian support to further the initiative of reuniting these children with their families and that doing so “will lead to broader regional stability.”
Russia has been accused of kidnapping Ukrainian children during its war on the Eastern European country that has stretched to more than three years.
So far, at least 15 children impacted by the war have been reunited with their families.
On Aug. 15, Melania Trump’s husband, President Donald Trump, handed Russian leader Vladimir Putin a letter from her regarding the plight of children during the war.
“As parents, it is our duty to nurture the next generation’s hope. As leaders, the responsibility to sustain our children extends beyond the comfort of a few,” the letter reads.
“Undeniably, we must strive to paint a dignity-filled world for all—so that every soul may wake to peace, and so that the future itself is perfectly guarded.
“A simple yet profound concept, Mr. Putin, as I am sure you agree, is that each generation’s descendants begin their lives with a purity—an innocence which stands above geography, government, and ideology.”
On Oct. 9, eight children affected by the war were reunited with their families.
“A child’s soul knows no borders, no flags,” Melania Trump said the following day, announcing that the reunification occurred after an “open channel of communication” on the issue was established following the delivery of her letter to Putin.
“We must foster a future for our children, which is reached with potential, security, and complete with free will, a world where dreams will be realized rather than threatened by war,” she said during the announcement.
A bipartisan Senate bill that would designate Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism got a boost on Dec. 3 during a hearing where lawmakers and witnesses blamed Putin for the kidnapping and brainwashing of Ukrainian children during the war.
“People in Ukraine and organizations are claiming that Putin’s Russia has separated over 19,000 Ukrainian children from their families, trying to turn them into Russians,” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said.
“You cannot honorably end this conflict unless you account for every child taken by Putin’s Russia from Ukraine. Period.”
The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Putin in 2023 on war crimes charges related to the unlawful deportation and transfer of Ukrainian children.
