A Garden Grove couple whose 5-month-old twins tested positive for fentanyl, with one of them sustaining a skull fracture, were sentenced to four years in prison March 5 after pleading guilty to child abuse.

Lauren Marie Hinton, 30, and Alexander Santiago, 34, both pleaded guilty to two felony counts of child abuse and child endangerment.

Fentanyl was detected in the baby boys’ system after Ms. Hinton brought one of her sons to Children’s Hospital of Orange County on Jan. 5.

She said that something was off with the baby and tests revealed the child had fentanyl in his bloodstream as well as a skull fracture, according to Garden Grove Police Department Sgt. Nick Jensen.

Sgt. Jensen said police then discovered the baby’s twin also had fentanyl in his system after they went to the family’s home to speak with Mr. Santiago, the father of the twins.

Court records show that Ms. Hinton also pleaded guilty to an additional felony charge of bringing fentanyl into jail.
