LOS ANGELES—A woman driving a 2024 Tesla was arrested for allegedly driving the wrong way on the Santa Monica (10) Freeway on April 7, triggering a crash that killed a motorist and left her and two others with major injuries.

The woman, a 51-year-old Los Angeles resident, suffered major injuries in the 1:50 a.m. Sunday crash on the westbound freeway at Overland Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A 19-year-old man driving a 2016 Toyota was trapped in the wreckage and pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

He was identified by the Medical Examiner’s Office as Jefferson Coreas-Lazo. He and his two occupants, a 13-year-boy and a 15-year-old girl, suffered major injuries. They are residents of Maywood, according to the CHP.

The Tesla was eastbound in the westbound lanes and struck the Toyota head-on, according to the CHP. A third vehicle, a 2020 Infiniti, sustained minor damage from debris in the roadway and the driver in that car, a 19-year-old man, drove away.

A Sigalert issued at 2:04 a.m., closing all westbound lanes at Overland was canceled at 7:24 a.m.

The CHP’s West Los Angeles office urged anyone with information regarding the crash to call them at 310-343-0512 or, after business hours, the Los Angeles Traffic Management Center at 323-259-3200.
