An 11-year-old driving a minivan recklessly crashed and flipped over during a rainstorm in Northern California over the weekend, officials said.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) said the incident started around 10:40 a.m. on Dec. 14 when they received multiple calls about a silver minivan driving erratically in Butte County, north of Sacramento. Callers said the van was driving at varying speeds and weaving between lanes heading south on State Route 99.

When officers attempted to pull the vehicle over, the driver sped up and did not yield, while merging onto SR-70. Unaware that the driver was a child, the CHP briefly followed the minivan, as a wintry storm drenched the northern part of the state.

“Due to adverse weather conditions, the pursuit was aborted after approximately 30 seconds, in the interest of public safety,” said the CHP in a social media post.

Around 11:40 am, the Chico Police Department informed the CHP that the driver was an 11-year-old minor, as reported by the minor’s guardian. At 11:47 a.m., additional calls came in that the minor was on the road again, this time southbound on SR-149 in the direction of Oroville.

Officers staged at Garden Drive and SR-70, just north of the Thermalito Forebay recreation area, and attempted to communicate with the minor when he drove onto the off-ramp. The minor briefly stopped, before again speeding away.

Officers then pursued the van at speeds of approximately 50 miles per hour, without using their lights and sirens in order to not scare the minor into a high-speed pursuit.

The officers focused on staying close enough to the vehicle to know the whereabouts of the minor, since there was no way to contact the child, instead of risking increased speeds.

The minor drove the vehicle westbound on Nelson Avenue for several miles, at one point speeding through a flooded area of the roadway at 60 miles per hour. The minor then lost control of the vehicle and the car flipped over on the north side of the roadway.

“Officers immediately assisted in removing the minor from the vehicle by removing the front windshield. Luckily the minor was wearing a seatbelt and had no visible injuries, but was transported to a local hospital as a precaution,” said the CHP.

CHP officials did not reveal the juvenile’s identity nor did they specify the charges the juvenile would face. Senate Bill 439, signed into law in 2018, forbids minors under the age of 12 to be arrested and face prosecution, except in cases of more serious charges such as murder or rape.

The dangerous chase and crash took place just days after another minor in nearby Magalia crashed a stolen truck, killing the truck owner who was in the truck bed and sparking a fire that downed power lines and caused hundreds of homes to lose power. Magalia is about 30 minutes from Oroville and is also in Butte County.
