Demand for meat is up, but cattle herds are shrinking, ranchers are going out of business, and the industry is facing some serious trouble. But behind it all may be something else. Cows aren’t disappearing. Ranchers aren’t going out of business because they don’t have markets. And there’s a cartel being accused of effectively causing these problems artificially—using a global monopoly to set prices and squeeze the industry.
