At the 2025 Conservative Political Action Conference, we sat down with Kari Lake, Trump’s choice to lead Voice of America, to discuss whether Elon Musk is right about wanting to scrap the state-funded media network.

“I understand the sentiment. … But I do think it’s premature to say that. This is an 83-year [old] outlet that has been doing in many of those years, good work,” Lake says. “When you look at the budget, it’s relatively a small budget item for the big work it could do.”

The role of director of Voice of America is officially nominated by the head of the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM), a role that requires Senate approval, and must then be approved by a majority vote of the International Broadcasting Advisory Board. L. Brent Bozell III, Trump’s pick to head USAGM, has not been confirmed by the Senate yet.
