Police are investigating after human remains were found near a popular San Juan Capistrano hiking trail.

The unidentified man was found April 17 by a hiker, who reported finding the remains in a dry creek bed off the Bluff Trail, said the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

“We do have an ongoing death investigation, but there’s no indication at this time that the death is criminal,” department spokesperson Carrie Braun told The Epoch Times. “They’re just conducting an autopsy and a full investigation.”

Police have identified the man, but said they weren’t prepared to release his name April 20 pending notification of next of kin.

No further details on the case were available.
