A 13-year-old boy was arrested July 8 on suspicion of setting off fireworks that sparked a wildfire in Laguna Beach, California.
Flames spread along Rancho Laguna hillside after about 2 p.m. on July 7 as the Rancho Fire grew, prompting authorities to evacuate some surrounding neighborhoods in the Southern California coastal town.
With the help of fixed-wing aircraft dumping water, crews were able to contain the fire to about four acres by July 8, according to the Laguna Beach Fire Department.
As crews responded to the fire, several witnesses reported seeing a juvenile in the area who was possibly setting off fireworks, according to authorities.
Laguna Beach Police Rangers quickly located and detained two juveniles for questioning, but determined they were not suspects. Officers later obtained video allegedly showing another juvenile lighting a firework and fleeing the scene.
Police say detectives worked with fire investigators to determine the cause of the blaze.
After hours of investigation, detectives say they identified the suspect and obtained search warrants for his arrest and the seizure of electronic devices.
The boy was taken into custody on suspicion of felony reckless burning of forestland. He was later released to his parents because the fire caused no injuries or damage to structures, police reported.
The case will be submitted to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office for review and possible filing of criminal charges.

Laguna Beach Police Chief Jeff Calvert applauded the community for helping identify the suspect.
“This case is a perfect example of what makes Laguna Beach unique—an engaged community that works hand in hand with its police department,” Calvert said in a statement on July 8. “When our residents speak up, we’re able to respond quickly and effectively. Public safety is a shared responsibility, and this outcome reflects that.”
Fire Chief Niko King attributed the fast response to the city’s preparation.
“Thanks to swift action, seamless coordination, and the city’s continued investment in wildfire preparedness, we were able to contain this fire quickly and limit its impact,” King posted on Facebook. “This Rancho Fire is an example of how regional collaboration works in practice—from aerial support and ground crews to communications and logistics.”
The mayor also expressed thanks for the coordinated effort.
“So grateful for our police, firefighters, and city employees for their diligence in this important investigation,” Mayor Alex Rounaghi posted on Instagram July 8.
Anyone with more information or video footage of the incident is encouraged to call the Laguna Beach Police Department.
