Bloomingdale’s in San Francisco Centre plans to permanently close March 31, according to a notice published with the state Feb. 3.
The department store, owned by Macy’s and located in the shopping district of Union Square, plans to lay off 164 employees at its 845 Market Street location, according to the notice.
A company representative did not return a request for information on the closure by publication time. Several other shuttered retailers, including Nordstrom in August 2023, reported sales have dropped off at the downtown mall.
The Nordstrom location anchored the Westfield San Francisco, which was renamed to the San Francisco Centre in June 2023 when Westfield and Brookfield gave up the mall to their lenders citing a decline in sales and foot traffic.
The luxury department store closed its flagship store after serving customers for 35 years at the mall, the company said at the time.
The “dynamics of the downtown San Francisco market” had changed dramatically over the past few years, impacting foot traffic at its store and the company’s ability to operate successfully, Nordstrom told its employees.
Other departed stores include the Lego store, Hollister, Adidas, Aldo, J. Crew, and Lucky Brand. The North Face and British luxury retailer Burberry vacated their Union Square properties in 2024.
In September 2023, the clothing retailer American Eagle sued the prior owners of the mall, saying their failure to uphold the terms of the lease agreement resulted in increased crime, including more than 100 occurrences of “significant security incidents” between May 2022 and May 2023, according to the lawsuit.
San Francisco’s economic ranking has plummeted in the past year, according to the latest Milken Institute report. The city was featured among the report’s top performers from 2016 to 2020 but has dropped recently, partly because of high housing costs and a drop in tech jobs, the institute said.
As a result, San Francisco dropped from 27th in 2024 to 126th this year among the nation’s large cities. The city ranked 35th in 2023.
