Elections for two Senate seats from Mississippi and Alaska still remain too close to call. In Mississippi, Democrat Scott Colom leads Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith by about 1,100 votes. Several thousand provisional ballots are still being counted. In Alaska, Democrat Mary Peltola leads Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan with just over 48 percent of the vote. Under state rules, a candidate needs a majority to win outright. Alaska expects to update its count on Nov. 10. If no one tops 50 percent, ranked-choice tabulation begins Nov. 18.

President Donald Trump is standing by War Secretary Pete Hegseth amid an impeachment push by lawmakers. He’s defending Hegseth’s leadership and saying he intends to keep him in the Cabinet. Republican Rep. Thomas Massie is leading the effort to remove Hegseth. Massie introduced eight articles of impeachment against the secretary in September, accusing him of violating congressional war powers and abusing his authority. The House has not voted on the articles, and Massie plans to renew the effort when Congress returns next week.

Nithya Raman will be the next mayor of Los Angeles, defeating incumbent Karen Bass. Raman becomes the first challenger in more than 20 years to unseat a sitting Los Angeles mayor. The latest vote count shows Raman with nearly 53 percent, compared with Bass at roughly 48 percent. About 76 percent of expected ballots are counted. Raman says she plans to focus on affordable housing, public safety, and improving public transportation as she prepares to take office.
