President Donald Trump on Wednesday nominated White House health policy adviser Dr. Heidi Overton to serve as commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration.

Trump announced the nomination in a Truth Social post, calling Overton a “rockstar” in his administration.

He said she would work on his administration’s health agenda with Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz.

“We need her leadership at the FDA now to ensure that the U.S. remains the WORLD LEADER for Scientific Discovery and CURES,” Trump said in the post.

Overton currently serves as deputy director of the White House’s Domestic Policy Council.

Trump said Overton was a White House Fellow in his first administration and said she is a board-certified physician in public health and general preventive medicine.

Kennedy said in a post on X that Overton has “exceptional judgment, professionalism, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to the American people.”

“A pantheon of superstar candidates made choosing our next FDA Commissioner one of the toughest decisions of my tenure at HHS,” Kennedy said. “I’m confident President Trump and I chose the best person for the job: Dr. Heidi Overton.”

Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) said she would vote no on Overton’s appointment.

“Heidi Overton is a far-right, anti-abortion extremist who has no business leading the FDA,” Murray said in a post on X. “The American people deserve someone who will put science and facts FIRST.”

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) was also critical of the nomination.

“Trump is throwing down the gauntlet to both sides in the Senate—nominating an FDA head who demeans vaccines, denounces reproductive rights, & degrades science,” he wrote on X on Wednesday.

Americans United for Life, an anti-abortion legal advocacy group, supported the nomination of Overton.

“Dr. Overton is the right candidate. She has the scientific and medical background that will enable her to perform an objective analysis of the dangers chemical abortion poses to women. Americans United for Life supports Dr. Overton as the next Commissioner of the FDA,” John Mize, CEO of Americans United for Life, said in a statement.

Sen. Roger Marshall (R-Kan.), an obstetrician and gynecologist, congratulated Overton on the nomination.

“Her impressive medical background makes her well-qualified to keep America leading the world in medical innovation,” Marshall said in a post on X.

While Overton was in medical school, she was appointed by Gov. Susana Martinez to serve on the University of New Mexico Board of Regents.

Overton was a general surgery resident at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where she also obtained her doctoral degree in Clinical Investigation from the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health.
