Texas-based Backyard Kids LLC is recalling roughly 192,000 units of “KidKraft Farm to Table Model Play Kitchens,” citing strangulation and asphyxia hazards that can result in injury or death among young children, the Consumer Protection Safety Commission (CPSC) said in a July 31 statement.

Designed for pretend play, the model number 53411 product is aimed at children aged 3 years or younger and sold online at KidKraft, Walmart, and Amazon from 2018 to July 2025. Prices ranged from $120 to $270.

“If young children are climbing on the counter or crawling through the opening at the back of the play kitchen, their clothing can get caught on the plastic or metal hooks meant to hold toy kitchen accessories such as play pots and pans, posing a strangulation hazard,” CPSC said.

In Feb. 2023, a 23-month-old child from Oregon ended up asphyxiated after his shirt caught on one of the hooks, said the agency.

“The child was unable to rescue himself and died from strangulation and asphyxia,” the CPSC statement said.

The items were manufactured in China. They were originally imported by Texas-based KidKraft from 2018 to 2023, and distributed by the company until May 2024, KidKraft said in a recall update.

In July 2024, KidKraft was sold to Backyard Kids through a bankruptcy process.

Backyard Kids bought 2,900 units of the play kitchen from KidKraft and sold roughly 400 to consumers and retailers.

“Since KidKraft, Inc. is not able to conduct a recall, Backyard Kids has voluntarily agreed to provide free replacement hooks (which hold toy accessories) to all consumers in the US with affected units as part of this recall,” said the update.

“Backyard Kids also will provide free replacement hooks to Canadian consumers who purchased play kitchens that Backyard Kids sold to retailers/consumers.”

Twelve units are estimated to have been sold in Canada.

In the July 31 recall notice, CPSC urged consumers to “immediately” cease using the play kitchens, remove the original hooks, and contact Backyard Kids to receive free replacement hooks.

The Epoch Times reached out to KidKraft for comment, but did not receive a response by publication time.

Back in April, New York-based Fisher-Price Inc. pulled around 253,000 units of stroller toys from the market after assessing that a part of the toy could crack into smaller portions, posing a choking hazard for children.

The company received five reports of toys breaking down in such a manner, with two reports mentioning the broken parts getting inside the mouths of infants. No injuries were reported.

According to a November 2024 report from CPSC, the agency’s staff received 10 reports of toy-related deaths in 2023 among children aged 14 or younger.

Causes of death include choking on a bouncing ball, drowning while using a flotation toy, and choking on a crayon.

“In 2023, an estimated 231,700 toy-related injuries for all ages were treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments, and males accounted for 57 percent of the injuries,” the report said.

“Most of the victims (92 percent) were treated and released from the hospital; 6 percent of the victims were admitted to the hospital or transferred to another hospital. The remaining 2 percent were held for observation, left without being seen by a doctor, or died in the emergency department.”

Out of the total injuries, 72 percent were suffered by children aged 14 or younger, with 36 percent among those aged 4 or younger, the report said.
