No Water Polo Medal: The Team USA women's water polo team suffered another defeat, making this the first time it hasn't won any medal since the sport's Olympics debut in 2000.

The United States’ men’s basketball team faced one of the toughest crowds in any of their careers on Saturday. They played for a fifth consecutive gold medal in the 2024 Summer Olympics. Against the host team from France—in Paris. But late-game scoring from one of the all-time great shooters closed the books on a 98–87 win for the Americans.
The game featured a battle between the present star of the NBA against a player many believe is the future, France’s Victor Wembanyama. And the young forward came out hot as the excitement in the gym felt like a Game 7 in the NBA playoffs. But LeBron James wasn’t ready for the torch to be passed quite yet.
James went straight to the rack and dunked to open the scoring. He consistently called for the ball, attacked the rim, and pumped up the U.S. bench after making shots.
Despite valiant efforts from Wembanyama and Guerschon Yabusele, France simply did not have the depth or firepower to keep up with the Americans. The game was close until Steph Curry put on a shooting clinic for the ages late in the fourth quarter to close the books on his first gold medal.
Wembanyama had seven of France’s 15 points in the first quarter. Devin Booker (7) and Anthony Edwards (6) led a balanced scoring effort from the United States that included seven assists on eight made baskets. Jayson Tatum, who didn’t play in the semifinal game and was the subject of a lot of conversation, checked into the game in the middle of the first quarter. The Americans took a 20–15 lead to the second quarter.
After an Anthony Davis dunk, France went on an 8–0 run to take a 25–24 lead early in the second quarter that forced Steve Kerr to take a timeout. The crowd was on its feet as the home team was rolling. Curry scored 36 in the semifinal win, but didn’t make a shot until the middle of the second quarter when he knocked down a three.
The loudest the arena got in the first half was when Yabusele threw down a huge dunk over LeBron to cut the lead to four. But Curry quickly answered with a three on the other end, followed by a LeBron steal, and Booker’s layup and free throw pushed the lead to double figures for the first time. The United States led 49–41 at the half after Yabusele dunked to beat the horn.
Yabusele led France with 15 points in the opening two quarters, while Wembanyama added 13. Booker (13 points) was the only American in double figures in a balanced offensive attack for the United States. LeBron had seven points, five rebounds, two assists, one block, and two steals before the intermission.
Yabusele and Wembanyama continued to be the bulk of the offense for France in the third quarter, but Curry started to warm up. The United States held its largest lead of the game at 14 when France took a timeout early in the third.
Play got sloppy late in the third quarter, but France was able to score the final five points of the period to get the home team within six with ten minutes remaining in regulation. Wembanyama had 20 of France’s 66 points through three quarters. LeBron, Curry, and Durant joined Booker in double figures for the United States as the game headed to a dramatic fourth quarter.
Then “Chef” Curry went off with four straight made threes as the game was tight late in the fourth quarter. After the third, he looked at the crowd and pumped the USA across his chest. After the fourth, he put his hands to the side of his head as if to say the game was going to bed. And it was.
Curry finished the game 8-of-12 from deep leading Team USA with 24 points. Wembanyama led France with a game-high 26 points in the loss.

Mallory Swanson celebrated her 100th cap with a goal in the 57th minute and the United States earned a record fifth gold medal in women’s soccer with a 1–0 victory over Brazil at the Paris Olympics on Saturday.
The Americans were playing in their sixth Olympic final in eight appearances and 11th final in 17 world championship appearances.
The United States won its first gold since 2012 in London.
Brazil also finished runner-up in Athens (2004) and Beijing (2008). The Brazilians also finished fourth in 1996, 2000, and 2016.
This was the third time the United States and Brazil played in the gold medal match at the Olympics. In those matchups, the United States beat Brazil at Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008.
The United States has the most Olympic gold and most total medals in the history of the competition, winning four golds, one silver and one bronze. Brazil has two silver medals, both coming from gold medal match losses to the Americans.
The Brazilians wanted to play at a frantic pace to keep the United States on its heels. The South Americans were effective in creating chances.
Brazil appeared to take the lead when Ludmila da Silva beat her defender and blasted a shot past goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher in the 16th minute. However, da Silva was ruled offside.
Still, Brazil controlled the run of play and the Americans struggled to keep pace with the speed of the game. The Americans began to settle down in the 34 minute and began pressuring Brazil to make errant passes. Forward Swanson was the most dangerous player for the United States.
Brazil came close to scoring again in the first minute of stoppage time but Naeher stopped a point-blank shot from Gabi Portilho. The U.S. midfielders Korbin Albert, Sam Coffey, and Lindsey Horanx struggled to string passes together and effectively set the attack against the Brazilians.
Brazil outshot the United States 4–3 and won the possession battle 54 percent to 46 percent.
The pace of the game did not slow down in the second half. Brazil midfielder Vitoria Yaya suffered an injury and had to be taken off the field on a stretcher and was replaced by Ana Vitoria.
The United States then took control and Swanson collected a through ball from Korbin Albert and slotted the ball from the center of the penalty area into the bottom right corner.
Brazilian star Marta, the six-time FIFA Player of the Year, entered the game in the 61st minute to provide a spark at age 38. However, Swanson’s goal changed the game’s momentum and Brazil began to chase the ball and absorb the pressure.

Marta had a free kick in the 89th minute but the ball sailed over the crossbar.
There were 10 minutes of stoppage time added and Brazil controlled much of the possession in an attempt to get the tying goal. Naeher had another huge save on a header by Adriana and the United States held on for the victory.
Brazil advanced from the group stage by beating Nigeria 1–0 to open the tournament but the South Americans dropped their next two games to Japan (2–1) and Spain (2–0). However, Brazil edged Australia by one goal for the second third-place knockout berth.
In the quarterfinals, Brazil beat host France 1–0 on a goal by Gabi Portilho in the 82nd minute. The Brazilians then had their most impressive performance with a 4–2 victory over reigning world champion Spain in the semifinal.
Brazil is one of seven teams to have medaled at both the Olympics and the Women’s World Cup, along with China, Germany, Japan, Norway, Sweden, and the United States.
