The kidneys are primarily responsible for detoxifying the body, and their health directly affects all organs and systems in the body. In this article, we will discuss the early signs of kidney disease, explore effective methods for supporting kidney health, and examine behaviors that can impair kidney function.

Recognizing the Signs of Kidney Disease

Early signs of kidney disease can be subtle, and by the time it progresses to kidney failure, dialysis may be needed to remove toxins and sustain life. Therefore, early detection is crucial. Be aware of the five early warning signs of kidney disease. If you notice any of these signs, it is important to seek medical attention promptly:
  • Sallow or dark yellow complexion
  • Darkened lips
  • Deep red tongue with a bluish tint and thick white coating
  • Full-body swelling (edema)
  • A strong odor of urine emanating from the body

Managing Chronic Conditions With Chinese Yam

High blood pressure, high blood sugar, high cholesterol, and kidney inflammation are key risk factors for chronic kidney disease.

A study published in International Urology and Nephrology found that the top three causes of chronic kidney disease in the elderly are diabetic nephropathy (24.1 percent), hypertension-related renal impairment (20.9 percent), and primary glomerular disease (11.1 percent). Additionally, 71.6 percent of elderly patients with chronic kidney disease suffer from two or more comorbidities, with the prevalence increasing with age.

Therefore, managing these conditions is crucial for protecting kidney health and avoiding the need for dialysis.

Chinese yam is a natural remedy for managing high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and high cholesterol. It is rich in mucin, which helps prevent fat accumulation in blood vessels and maintains their elasticity, thereby reducing the risk of atherosclerosis. Furthermore, the mucopolysaccharides, potassium, and dietary fiber in Chinese yam contribute to stabilizing blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels.

In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Chinese yam is often used to treat diabetes. A meta-analysis of 53 randomized controlled trials revealed that when combined with conventional treatments—either alone or as part of an herbal formula—Chinese yam effectively reduced blood sugar, blood lipids, and insulin resistance in patients with Type 2 diabetes.

TCM Approaches for Nourishing Kidney Health

TCM treatment for kidney disease often begins with addressing the spleen and stomach. For example, managing edema in kidney patients involves nurturing and supporting the function of these organs.

In TCM, the term “spleen” encompasses more than just the anatomical organ—it refers to an energy system centered around the spleen that regulates the pancreas and digestive system. In addition to its role in immunity, the spleen is considered closely linked to digestion. By nurturing the spleen and stomach, one can promote better kidney health.

The ancient TCM text “Compendium of Materia Medica (Ben Cao Gang Mu)” documents that Chinese yam can nourish the kidneys, strengthen the spleen and stomach, and relieve diarrhea. During hot weather, a refreshing cold yam salad makes for a great dish. As the weather cools, a pot of yam and pork rib soup or yam and chicken soup is perfect for the whole family to enjoy together.

Additionally, TCM associates the spleen with the color yellow, believing that yellow foods are particularly beneficial for the spleen and stomach. Recommended yellow foods include millet, pumpkin, and sweet potatoes, all of which help strengthen the spleen and support kidney health. Research has shown that pumpkin polysaccharides can lower blood sugar and cholesterol levels.

Essential Habit Changes for Improving Kidney Health

Making some simple changes to dietary habits can support kidney health.
  1. Limit the consumption of raw or cold foods and drinks, such as salads and ice cream.
  2. Reduce the intake of overly sweet foods and drinks, as they can place a significant burden on the spleen and stomach.
For example, excessive consumption of fructose in sugary beverages can raise uric acid levels, which may trigger gout. Gout can, in turn, lead to kidney damage, potentially requiring dialysis. Drinking too many sugary beverages can also place additional stress on the kidneys, accelerating their decline in function.

Therefore, for those who enjoy sugary beverages, it is advisable to start by cutting back to two servings per week. Gradually reduce this further to one serving per week and continue to decrease your intake as needed.

3. Avoid excessively greasy, salty, or strongly flavored foods, such as spicy and fried foods.

Many cases of chronic kidney failure are caused by high blood pressure, with excessive salt intake being a major contributing factor. Too much salt can directly raise blood pressure, which in turn harms the kidneys.

A review published in Nutrients found that patients with high blood pressure should make a concerted effort to reduce their salt intake. This reduction can benefit the cardiovascular system overall by lowering blood pressure, improving vascular function, and enhancing arterial elasticity.

If you wake up with facial swelling, it is important to be cautious and consider whether your recent diet has been too salty or heavily seasoned. By adjusting your diet, particularly by reducing salt intake, the swelling may subside within a few days.

Health Benefits of Bathing

An 80-year-old woman diagnosed with chronic kidney failure not only took medication but also took baths for 15 minutes every morning and evening. After three months, her glomerular filtration rate increased, indicating a recovery in kidney function. Additionally, her high blood pressure and sleep issues also showed improvement. These positive changes are attributed to the bathing routine. Specifically, bathing enhances circulation in the spleen, liver, and kidneys, which helps expel toxins through sweating.

When taking a bath, ensure the water temperature is between 100 F and 104 F. For individuals with kidney issues, it is recommended to drink a glass of warm water (about 10 fluid ounces) before bathing and another glass afterward to prevent dehydration. Dialysis patients should avoid bathing on the same day as their treatment to prevent low blood pressure and shock. Instead, wait until the day after dialysis to bathe.

Behaviors That Harm Kidney Health

To protect kidney health, consider the following tips:
  • Avoid eating starfruit if you have kidney disease: Kidney disease patients should avoid eating starfruit or drinking starfruit juice, as it contains a unique neurotoxin that those with impaired kidney function cannot metabolize. This can lead to symptoms of poisoning, ranging from mild issues like hiccups and vomiting to severe complications such as paralysis, coma, or even death.
  • Limit the use of pain-relief patches: Some people use pain-relief patches when they experience body aches, but excessive use can harm the liver and kidneys. Most patches on the market contain salicylic acid or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. These substances are metabolized by the liver and kidneys, and overuse can adversely affect kidney function.

When using pain-relief patches, it is advisable to use no more than two patches per day and to wear each patch for no longer than six hours.
