Hayden Panettiere died from a drug overdose, a coroner said on Sept. 22.
“The cause of death has been ruled as toxic effects of fentanyl, 4-ANPP, Alprazolam, Methocarbamol, and Quetiapine,” the Greenville County Coroner’s Office in South Carolina said in a statement to NTD, The Epoch Times’ sister media.
Fentanyl is an opioid that can cause fatal overdoses. The substance 4-ANPP is used to manufacture fentanyl. Alprazolam, also known as Xanax, is a prescription anti-anxiety medication. Methocarbamol is a muscle relaxer, and Quetiapine is a medication used to treat mental health issues.
The manner of death was ruled accidental. An autopsy showed no signs of trauma that would have contributed to the death, the coroner’s office said.
Panettiere, 36, of California, died in Greenville on Aug. 16. She was found unresponsive inside a residence where she had been temporarily staying. Resuscitation efforts were not successful, and she was pronounced dead after approximately 40 minutes.
“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden,” her family said after the death was announced.
“She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her—and to the millions who watched her onscreen.”
Authorities said previously that a preliminary investigation uncovered no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances, and that an acquaintance of Panettiere had called 911.
On Tuesday, a representative for the family told news outlets in a statement, “The investigation is still ongoing and the case is complex.”
A Greenville Police Department spokesperson told The Epoch Times via email that police are aware of the coroner’s report.
“The Coroner’s Office report represents one component of the ongoing investigation,” the spokesperson said. “The Greenville Police Department’s investigation remains active and has not been closed. Our detectives will continue to follow leads and gather information as we work toward resolving this case.”
Police said no other information is available at this time.
