The world-renowned, U.S.-based Shen Yun Performing Arts arrived in South Korea on Feb. 9, officially launching the second stop of its Asia tour. Local fans gathered early at Incheon International Airport to welcome the artists’ arrival.
Oliver Perrett, the master of ceremonies for Shen Yun Performing Arts, said, “This is my first time to come to Korea, and I’m really excited to be here and to experience the culture and learn more about the local situation.”
This year marks Shen Yun’s 20th anniversary. As the premier company dedicated to classical Chinese dance and traditional music, Shen Yun now features eight touring companies of equal size, simultaneously performing around the world.
Bella Fan, a principal dancer with Shen Yun Performing Arts, said, “To me, twenty years feels like a chapter in a story. It represents the hard work and dedication of many people. The continuous effort and perseverance make me cherish every opportunity to step on stage. With each role, I reflect on the character’s values and inner spirit, and I strive to express my understanding of that on stage.”
Mr. Perrett said, “The beauty of traditional culture is something that modern creations can never compare to, because we believe that traditional culture is divinely inspired. And so the show is something that feeds the soul. It’s something that can heal and enrich the heart in a way that nothing else can. And so, audience members are just very touched by the show, and they might not entirely understand why, but I believe it’s because of that divine connection.”
Shen Yun is recognized as a world-class company in classical Chinese dance and traditional music. Shen Yun’s orchestra is the first in the world to combine classical Chinese and Western instruments.
Li Xuan, a conductor for Shen Yun Performing Arts, said, “Shen Yun’s orchestra combines a Western symphony orchestra with traditional Chinese instruments. We want to fully utilize the richness and depth of Western harmonies, blend them with the graceful melodic lines of Chinese music, and incorporate elements of Chinese culture to complement the bearing and techniques of classical Chinese dance. That’s what makes Shen Yun’s music truly one of its kind.”
Shen Yun seeks to revive 5,000 years of authentic Chinese civilization through its artistic expression, earning admiration from audiences wherever it performs.
Hyung-Shin Kim, a Shen Yun supporter, said, “In a society where moral values are gradually eroding, Shen Yun carries a mission to travel the world promoting the principles of Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance. By doing so, it inspires and guides more people toward righteousness. I believe this is Shen Yun’s most precious and important value.”
Yicai Lin, a representative for PLUS VALUE, said, “Each time I watch Shen Yun, I gain profound insights. Every year, the artists convey unique and meaningful messages through their performances, which deeply move me. As the company celebrates its 20th anniversary, I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the artists.”
Shen Yun’s first performances are in South Korea’s second-largest city of Busan, on Feb. 14, followed by Daegu from Feb. 18 to the 20.
