A California state legislator is hoping to repeal daylight savings time in the state and revert to year-round standard time.
Sen. Roger Niello (R-Roseville) is working with state lawmakers in Oregon and Washington to pass legislation that would permanently end the time switch.
“Sleep experts believe that standard time is more appropriate to our natural clocks,” Mr. Niello told CBS News in Sacramento. “If my legislation prevails, next November we’ll turn them back again and we’ll never change them again after that.”
California’s Proposition 7, approved by voters in 2018, allows the state to change the daylight savings time if Congress approves, which is unlikely, according to Mr. Niello. But the proposition also authorized legislators to change to permanent standard time without congressional approval, if passed by a two-thirds majority in the state Legislature.
State lawmakers in Oregon attempted to pass the same measure if Washington and California also adopted measures to do that same. The bill passed the Senate on a 16-14 vote, but died in the Oregon House as time ran short in the session, which ended March 10.
The same proposal also died in Washington state, where a bipartisan group of state lawmakers were fighting to “ditch the switch.” The session ended March 7 before the bill received a committee hearing.
