A Buena Park man was sentenced April 9 to 30 years to life in prison for a drunken-driving crash that killed four people in Santa Ana more than five years ago.

Vincent Michael Calvo, 33, was driving under the influence on Feb. 17, 2019, when he ran into a vehicle carrying four people, killing all of them.

Calvo was driving a Jeep westbound on Fourth Street when he collided with a southbound Chevrolet Silverado pickup at Tustin Avenue after failing to stop for a red light at the intersection, according to police.

Police said both vehicles flipped several times. The victims, who were trapped in the burning pickup, were declared dead at the scene.

They were identified as Jose Alberto Avila-Rosas, 31, the driver of the pickup; Zimoara Zaragoza, 23, of Garden Grove; Antonio Alonso Santibanez, 23, of Orange; and Prisma Yuliana Montoya, 34, of Santa Ana.

Calvo got out of his Jeep to try to help the victims, and an off-duty firefighter and his wife, a nurse, also tried to assist them, according to police.

The firefighter was able to put out the flames and his wife rendered aid to Calvo, who was the lone occupant of the Jeep.

Police said Calvo, who was “extremely impaired,” was taken to a hospital for treatment, then released into police custody.

Calvo’s blood-alcohol level was 0.29 percent, three times  the legal limit, according to the criminal complaint.

On March 28, 2024, Calvo pleaded guilty to four counts of second-degree murder.
