IRVINE, Calif.—A disabled man was fatally stabbed by a former caregiver, who was later shot and killed by police in Irvine Aug. 5, police said.
A caregiver called police about 2:15 a.m. when he found 38-year-old John Alexander Bash III—who was paralyzed and relied on a wheelchair—bloodied and unconscious, police said.
When officers arrived, they saw the suspect’s minivan had slammed into the home on Whistling Swan near Wetstone, said Irvine Police Department spokesman Kyle Oldoerp.
Bash was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The suspect—47-year-old Aaron Matthew Shindle, previously of Tampa, Florida—was spotted by an officer at about 3:25 a.m. at Stonecreek South and West Yale Loop, police said. When the knife-wielding Shindle advanced on the officer he was shot and rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, police said.
The crash into the victim’s house caused a minor gas leak, which first responders managed to quickly handle, Oldoerp said.
